Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today announced a new partnership with Booking.com, Europe’s largest and fastest growing online hotel reservation service. Ryanair’s passengers can now gain access to Booking.com’s inventories of over 57,000 great value hotels in more than 15,000 destinations in Europe and beyond via http://www.ryanair.com. Priceline eyes marketing push for Booking.com

Priceline has not ruled out a major branding programme for its European brand booking.com after admitting that its previous strategy did not suit the UK market.

Since the ill-fated launch of Priceline in Europe the company has shied away from any major marketing for its European arm despite its acquisition of Active Hotels and development of the booking.com brand.

Officials have admitted for the first time that the previous Priceline marketing programme was suitable for a US audience but did not resonate with UK consumers.

Brett Keller, chief marketing officer for Priceline, told Travolution: “We came back to the US with our tails between our legs over the logistics of that campaign.”

Booking.com has established itself as one of the leading hotel aggregators in Europe in recent years and the acquisition of Active Hotels saw very little crossover with other hotel sites under the Priceline umbrella, Keller said.

He added: “There will absolutely be a time where we will look at the booking.com brand and give it more of a public show.”

The competitive rates on booking.com meant that is “the right place for that type of product” during an economic downturn, Keller said.

Published: 27 Aug 2008

Online hotel portal Booking.com has launched a new avenue for smaller hotels and guesthouses, integrating a direct booking tool into their own websites.

As per the new Booking Button, hotels of all sizes can offer direct bookings through their own websites. Neither a set-up fee nor an annual fee is charged for this service by the company.

Hotels pay Booking.com a low, per-booking commission of three percent for bookings made through the Booking Button.

Once the hotels have inserted the Booking Button onto their websites, it connects consumers directly (and seamlessly) to Booking.com’s fully configured reservation system. The button requires no additional software or hardware investment by hotels.

“Our Booking Button solution is particularly helpful for smaller hotels and chains that, until now, have only been able to process online availability enquiries via email or telephone,” says Martin Lamme who, as Project Manager Hotels, is responsible for the development of the tool. “Consumers seeking and reserving hotel accommodation today expect to receive an immediate booking confirmation, even from small hotels.”

Booking Button available in seven languages and six designs.

When a reservation query is placed, the hotel website identifies all options which are available via the Booking.com system at the respective hotel.

“Depending on the hotel, a generous list of options might be generated. Often, the options range from specials for early bookers to seasonal offers and long stays in apartments and family rooms,” said Rachel Howes, Managing Director Booking.com UK.

According to the company, the reservation tool provides guests with significantly more options than the service which smaller hotels could offer themselves. Now, hotels can present their online visitors with a new reservation system in seven languages. The content is currently available in German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch and Polish.

Booking.com responds to HotelMarketing.com article

On August 12, 2008, HotelMarketing.com linked to a story (Booking.com Mum On Fraud Claim) from a Website, Officialwire.com. Booking.com wants HotelMarketing.com’s readers to have the real facts.

Booking.com maintains a hotel review and scoring system where potential customers can evaluate satisfaction levels from other customers who have stayed at a particular hotel.  Booking.com takes this review system very seriously and monitors every review and score to insure that it comes from actual customers and not from employees or affiliates of a hotel.

Recently, the Booking.com staff noticed a hotel where the owners and affiliated individuals had booked themselves several times into the property in order to be able to boost the hotel’s review scores. Some of the questionable bookings were using e-mail addresses of officialwire.com. Before the bookings were made, the hotel lowered its rate from 600 to 60 Euro per night.

This activity is a violation of Booking.com’s hotel participation policies.  After further review, the hotel was removed from the Booking.com system.  At no time did Booking.com offer to reinstate the hotel in return for paying commissions that were owed to Booking.com.

Booking.com mum on fraud claim

Allegations of fraud have been levied against Priceline.com’s European hotel reservation system - Booking.com - but the company has refused to comment according to this article.

This story begins five days ago, when Yiorgos (George) Yiannios, an employee of Booking.com, claimed that a number of reservations made through the Booking.com system were “fraudulent” and that he believed that the hotelier had made the reservations to advance its guest reviews. Without waiting for a reply from the hotelier, George deleted the hotel from Booking.com.

According to an email written by Yiannios, the basis of his claim was that several groups of reservations were made from the same IP address.

Despite believing that the reservations were “fraudulent” (to use Yiannios’ word), Booking.com charged the hotel the full commission and demanded payment of these ‘fraudulent commissions’ before they would restore the hotel’s access to Booking.com.

Booking.com powers Air Berlin

Booking.com is now the Premium Partner for hotel bookings made through Air Berlin. The second largest airline in Germany has extended its high-traffic website via an XML interface to Europe’s market leader for online hotel reservations.

As of 1st July, all of the hotels listed on Booking.com will be bookable directly and securely through airberlin.com. ”We have chosen to work with Booking.com because their portal has the most impressive selection of directly cooperating hotels“, says Johannes Ganser, the Director of Loyalty & Partnerships Air Berlin.

“In addition, we have been convinced by both the volume and the highly professional presentation of their information, as well as the great speed with which a search query can be resolved“, Ganser continues. This rapid processing is facilitated by highly flexible software components, which Air Berlin has used to create a customised XML interface with Booking.com.

“This Premium Partnership with Air Berlin is above all of benefit to our partner hotels, who are not only represented on the airline’s website, but are also integrated into many of the company’s marketing activities,“ says Gillian Tans who, as Managing Director of Booking.com in Germany, has responsibility for the German hotels listed on booking.com.

Accordingly, the offers of over 45,000 hotels have been integrated into the most popular webpages of airberlin.com, through the use of destination-specific banners and a direct booking tool. In addition, the hotels on Booking.com are to be shown in a separate hotel booking section of the Air Berlin website. Once a customer has booked a flight, they will be given the opportunity of booking accommodation in the relevant destination. Last but not least, Booking.com will benefit from having its brand represented via logos at Air Berlin’s ticket desks, check-in counters, aircraft entrances, and on on-board TV programmes.
